Meditations

December 19th, 2007 by Robert Fountain

I was chatting with my friend Steve James at the New WMCU Radio/1080 AM yesterday about the subject of Biblical Meditation. You see, the enemy of our faith almost always tries to counterfeit spiritual truth, and thereby confuse people and even cause us to reject beneficial principles in our confusion over which is Truth and which is counterfeit. The subject of meditation is a good example of that.

In Psalm 1:1-3, the psalmist writes: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:But his delight is in the law of Jehovah; And on his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the streams of water, That bringeth forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also doth not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper…”

Again, in Psalm 119:15, “I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.”

And in Psalm 77:12, “I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”

Over and over again the scriptures speak of meditation! In fact, in Joshua chapter 1, the man called by God to lead the people of Israel into their inheritance was commanded by God to meditate!

Joshua 1:8: “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous (you will learn to act wisely), and then thou shalt have good success.”

Now, the enemy’s counterfeit asks you to empty your mind and be open to pretty much anything that enters your thoughts, which is an invitation that the demonic realm simply will not pass up! He will take advantage of your unwise and intentional openness to sow seeds of confusion and deception into your mind. But the consistent theme of all Biblical Meditation is that it has as it’s focus the Word of God, and/or the works of God! God tells us that we need to quiet ourselves in His presence, ponder, consider, and meditate upon His word, His law, His precepts and principles so that we will be careful to act based upon those precepts and principles, and therefore act wisely and be successful in all our undertakings. God wants you to deliberately consider, with Him, the laws and guidelines He has given you for living life!

He also wants you to contemplate and reflect upon His works, because He knows that stopping regularly to carefully consider His generosity, goodness, kindness, and mercy toward you will foster gratitude, confidence in His faithfulness, and peace that surpasses understanding because of a certainty that He who has always been with you will continue to be with you!
Dear friend, we won’t always understand the trials, hardships, and evils we have to endure in this life, but if we will set aside time regularly to obey the command God gave to Joshua we will find strength, peace, and wisdom from the Lord to live a victorious Christian life as we walk through the hard times holding tightly to His hand!

Just a Thought,

Pastor Robert
