Colossians 1: 9 – 12 Sermon Notes
Col0ssians 1: 9 – 12 Questions

For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Four Points:

I.That we would Know God’s will

There was this guy who bought his kid a bicycle for his birthday. He brought it home, got it out of the box, and got ready to put it together. Being a wise man, the first thing he did was to read the assembly instructions, because that’s what you’re supposed to do, after all. But then he proceeded to attach the rear wheel to the front forks, and put the bike together the way HE wanted it to be assembled! How do you suppose that worked out in the end?…

That’s having wisdom without understanding!

Amos 8:11 says: “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.”

That was a reference to 4 centuries of prophetic silence, but today even though the Word of God  is read and proclaimed, it often isn’t heard!

We study it without living it!

Paul was praying that the people of Colossae would know how to live according to Truth, and have the good sense to then live according to what they knew!

That’s the problem, quite often!

Like the husband who once said to me; I know what I need to do, I just need to have the self-disciple to consistently act on what I know!

II.    That we would walk worthy of Him!

Pleasing Him, and bearing good fruit!

Rather than putting the bike together the way we think it ought to be put together, we ask Him to come along side us and help us to put the bicycle together correctly!

Thats also how you go about increasing in the knowledge of Him.

Growing in intimacy, growing closer to Him as you walk along with Him day by day!

And through that we are…

III.  Strengthened to endure

With His glorious power… Not just barely surviving life’s hurdles and hardships!

Life can be brutal, but for the person who draws close to Jesus in the midst of it all, following His instructions, His grace, His mighty power is there to go through it all with JOY!

With JOY! Not with resentment or bitterness!

IV.  Giving thanks

Verse 12: “…giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

He qualified us to be heirs by forgiving our sin and putting His own Spirit inside us!

We are inadequate, in and of ourselves.

But He moved us from the kingdom of darkness, where we were ruled and governed by our human desires and emotions, into the Kingdom of His Son, where we are led by His Spirit into the inheritance He has for us; the treasures of HIS Kingdom!

The treasures of our inheritance in this life are received and enjoyed only through trusting Him and living according to His will, in HIS wisdom, in the light!

So, you are qualified to be partakers in the inheritance!

Don’t be like dumbo the dad, who reads the instructions, but then does life on his own terms, and ends up with a big mess.

Instead, be a partakers of His inheritance by hearing His instructions, and acting upon what you learn.   Pray

Questions:

Give an example when you have tried it your way and how you found out that God’s way is better.

What do you do daily to know the will of God? How is knowing the will of God different from doing the will of God?

Why should you step aside and let God work in your life?

Give an example of when you saw God work in your life.

II. … that we (sh) (w) (c) ould walk worthy of God.

Are you able to listen and discern, if God is being silent in your life, like in the time of Amos, why that might be so?

Does your hunger for God’s will get satisfied, in your daily life, during the week? Are you hungry for God?

When have you seen God work in your circumstances? Are you looking for the divine fingerprints in the ordinary things or the problems in your life?

Give an example when your dependence on God has gotten you through an impossible looking situation.

III. … that we are strengthened to endure.

F. Forever I. In N. Need of E. Encouragement

Are you fine?

How can you draw on God’s strength to get through the hard times?

Who can you sit down with and check your heart to see, if you are relying on your own power or God’s strength?

IV. …that we give thanks.

What have you done that qualifies you to inherit the kingdom of God?

Explain how this character trait should look in your daily life.

How has God convicted you that you have the wrong perspective of life?

How do you know that you have the kingdom of God in your heart?
